Jasmine Sharma wins Hubert Reeves Environmental Award and $1,000 grant in Vaudreuil-Dorion

The city of Vaudreuil-Dorion awarded the 2014 Hubert-Reeves prize to highlight the involvement of a citizen to Jasmine Sharma for her positive impact on the environment. According to Sharma, after hearing about the city initiative the year before she decided to submit idea based on her love of the environment. The winning project was an urban garden made from discarded shipping palettes lined with textile and then filled with earth. “I had a budgetary constraint and a spacial constraint since I did not want to give up the green space in my backyard,” Sharma told The Suburban in an interview, “I went to the local hardware store and asked for palettes that were no longer in use and they were very generous.” “I was able to grow pretty much anything that has a shallow root like herbs, lettuce and green beans.” The selection committee screens applications to the Environment Committee of the city. Several criteria need to be met. The candidate must live in Vaudreuil-Dorion, the project must be completed within the borders of the city and the project needed to be produced in the contest year. Criteria for the project required the submission be innovative, sustainable and have a direct and positive impact on the environment.
