The Bread Basket, a not-for-profit organization, which offers community kitchens and food programs in the West Island, will benefit from the first Empty Bowls event to be held on the West Island. Baie D’Urfé potters guild has been supporting the Empty Bowls project in Montreal Sheila Caplan, a former member of the guild, spearheaded the drive in 2008. The entrance fee is $25 which entitles you to choose a bowl to take home after partaking in a delicious bowl of soup. For families the fee is $50 for 2 bowls and soup for everyone. If you don’t need another bowl, then $5 will purchase a bowl of soup to help support the Bread Basket endeavours in the West Island. According to Catheryn Mayhew, co-President of the guild Sheila initiated the first ever Empty Bowl-a-thon where members were encouraged to craft soup bowls for the cause. Today it is an annual event that has crafters creating bowls both at home and at the studio at Whiteside Taylor Centre in Baie D’Urfé. Many of the bowls are made from clay donated by former guild members. “As potters we all love to get our hands in clay,” Mayhew told The Suburban, “but being able to do what we love as well as to give back to our community puts a smile on our faces and warmth in our hearts. It's a very satisfying feeling!” The event which hopes to sell all 350 donated bowls, will take place on Saturday, April 18 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. or from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at at Saint Columba By The Lake Presbyterian Church, 11 Rodney Ave. in Pointe-Claire.
